A wonderful Mother’s Day weekend was enjoyed at one of South Carolina’s many state parks;
tucked away in a McCormick SC sits Hickory Knob State Park.

Mother’s Day 2019 was my first Mother’s Day without our son. Actually, Mother’s Day 2018 was the last day I saw him alive and 17 days later he was gone. Although I spoke to him daily during his final 17 days it still bothered me as this year’s Mother’s Day approached. I just felt it made his absence final. So, my wonderful husband decided that we needed a weekend getaway to ease my pain and that’s when we decided to go camping; perfect timing because it was always my perfect vacation with our family!

Hickory Knob State Resort Park is located in the small town of McCormick, S.C. and the town’s population is less than 2000. We toured the town and it didn’t offer any hidden gems. A few stores include Red Rooster Antique, White Hardware, Food Lion, Dollar General, Family Dollar, and a few other boutiques. The town does offer a few museums and it’s the perfect town for golfers since the town sits along the shores of Strom Thurmond Reservoir Lake, part of the Savannah River, fishermen would love this place. Hickory Knob is a few miles from Baker Creek State Park yet Hickory Knob offers better amenities!
Hickory Knob State Resort Park is the only resort among South Carolina State Parks. We stayed in one of the rustic cabins that were fully equipped with a living room, dining area, full kitchen, 2 full-size beds, and a bath. The park does offer lodge rooms, tent sites, and RV sites. The grounds are beautiful with hundreds of acres of hiking trails. The amenities included a full-service restaurant, swimming pool, archery, skeet shooting, basketball court, tennis, volleyball, horseshoes, putting a green area. The perfect setting for biking, hiking, fishing, canoeing, or boating. Best of all, Hickory Knob offers an 18-hole championship golf course, clubhouse, practice green, driving range, pro shop, and lounge.

After arriving we quickly unpacked and explored the grounds. We spent our weekend swimming, hiking, fishing, and canoeing. Since we had a full kitchen we cooked all our meals inside. And I did attempt to keep our meals camper-style quality. We ate sandwiches, fried fish and grits, baked potatoes, surf and turf, and a crawfish boil. The most unique thing I saw was the red clay at the bottom of the lake and it was so slippery when I put my feet in the water. But the most hilarious part of our trip was when it was time to canoe and I… Maybe one day I’ll share the story with you. ♥♥♥ Overall, Mother’s Day 2019 became therapeutic. I was able to sit in the presence of my life (meditate, pray and relax) while enjoying God’s creation, nature!
